Aggies Take Down I-25 Rival New Mexico

New Mexico State defeats UNM in five innings as the Aggies win 8-0.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Aggies defeated I-25 foe New Mexico 8-0 in a five innings shutout on Wednesday. New Mexico State moves to 9-11, winning five out of its last six games. The Lobos fall to 14-11.

Nikki Butler hit her first collegiate home run in the victory. Kelsey Horton also hit a home run, her fourth homer of the season.

How It Happened

New Mexico State came out hot as the Aggies put up three runs in the first inning. Rachel Rodriguez got the inning going with a leadoff single to start the game. She followed up her single with her 12th stolen base of the year as the junior stole second with Haley Nakamura at the plate.

Nakamura singled to put runners on the corners with Horton at the plate. Horton hit a single to score Rodriguez and give the Aggies the 1-0 advantage. Victoria Castro drove in the next two runs as the junior hit a single of her own to score Nakamura and Horton.

In the third inning Horton hit her fourth home run of the season to give the Aggies the 4-0 lead.

NM State scored two runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to close out the game. Nakamura hit a two RBI double in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Butler came to the plate with Caity Szczesny on second. The freshman hit a two-run homer to end the game and give the Aggies the 8-0 victory

Kayla Green picked up her fifth win as the sophomore pitched her first complete shutout of the season. She allowed five hits and struck out three batters.

New Mexico State is back in action on Saturday as the Aggies travel to take on the Huskers of Nebraska. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 11 a.m. (MT).
