LINCOLN, NEB. – New Mexico State softball fell in the series finale at Nebraska on Sunday as the Huskers defeated the Aggies 4-1.
The Aggies had the early 1-0 lead over the Huskers in the second inning. Victoria Castro got the inning going with a single up the middle. Caity Szczesny followed with a single and advanced on the throw to put runners on second and third. Nikki Butler drove home Castro with the third single of the inning to give NM State the 1-0 lead.
Nebraska put up a run in the third and another in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over NM State.
New Mexico State had its chances in the fourth, as the Aggies had the bases loaded with two outs. However, a strikeout ended the inning and NM State's chance for a rally.
The Aggies gave up two more runs in the sixth to give the Huskers the 4-1 advantage.
New Mexico State had a late rally in the seventh. With two outs in the inning, Fahren Galckin was hit by a pitch. Castro singled to bring the tying run to the plate. Szczesny went down swinging for the final out of the game.
Samaria Diaz started in the circle for the New Mexico State. She falls to 4-6 on the season as the Aggies move to 9-14.
New Mexico State travels to take on Omaha on Tuesday. First pitch is set for noon (MT).
