NM State Can’t Contain Top-Ranked Huskies

Despite taking an early lead over No. 1 Washington, the Aggies fell 9-1 in the contest.

LAS VEGAS - The New Mexico State softball team continued its run at the Rebel Classic with a contest against No. 1 Washington on Friday afternoon. The Aggies fell to the top-ranked Huskies 9-1 in six innings.

After a scoreless first inning, NM State (11-10) came out hot when Victoria Castro hit a double to right center field, extending her 15-game hitting streak. Following the play, Stefani Duran was hit by a pitch and Fahren Glackin drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch by the Washington's ace Taran Alvelo brought Castro home to score for the first run of the game.

Trailing for just the third time all season, the Huskies (24-0) looked to even the score in the top of the third when the team recorded a double and a single against Aggie pitcher Samaria Diaz. Another single brought in the tying run and an error by the NM State catcher Nikki Butler helped score Washington's second run of the contest.  In the following inning, Diaz gave up a single and a double to the Huskies, extending New Mexico State's 3-1 deficit.

After a scoreless fifth for both squads, NM State struggled in the circle in the sixth and after Diaz gave up a single and hit a batter, head coach Kathy Rodolph made the decision to bring in Mikayla Bongi to pitch. The freshman gave up four hits to Washington including a three-run home run to Kirstyn Thomas that put the Huskies ahead 9-1.

In the bottom of the inning, the Aggies looked to rally after Butler was hit by a pitch to put a base runner on for NM State. However, a pop fly ended the inning and New Mexico State fell 9-1 in just six innings.

Diaz moves to 1-4 in the circle this season with the loss. The freshmen pitched 5.0 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out a pair of Husky batters and only walking a single player.

NM State plays in a pair of contests on Saturday, March 10, beginning with a rematch against No.1 Washington at 12:15 p.m. MT. The Aggies close out the Rebel Classic with a contest against host UNLV at 2:30 p.m.
