LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Diaper Dandy!
Freshman
Aidan Thomas dazzled in his first collegiate tournament at NM State Golf Course, claiming individual co-champion honors at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate with a six-under-par 207. His performance helped lead the NM State men's golf team to a second-place team finish at even-par 852.
Thomas fired a career-best six-under-par 65 in the third round to rocket up the leaderboard on the final day. He and Wichita State's Dawson Lewis both hit pars on the 18th green to end in a deadlock at six-under-par 207 overall.
The Aggies had seven other competitors finish in the leaderboard's top 25, including three members of their fivesome who placed in the top 10. Freshman
Cole Grossl and sophomore
Cameron Gambini both tied for eighth at two-over-par 215, while senior
Tanvir Kahlon tied for 10th at three-over-par 216.
Senior
Ryo Harada and freshman
Scott Rescigno, both playing as individuals, tied for 16th and 19th, respectively. Harada came in at four-over-par 217, and Rescigno shot a five-over-par 218.
Senior
Niall Powell tied for 22nd at six-over-par 219, and freshman
Tyler Diehl was right behind him at seven-over-par 220. Both competed as individuals.
Sophomore
Garrison Smith, playing in the Aggie fivesome, tied for 35th, as did freshman
Trey Diehl, who competed as an individual. Both came in at 10-over-par 223.
Freshman
Steven Strasheim and junior
Tyler Svendson rounded out the Aggies' group of individuals. Strasheim tied for 43rd (226, +13), and Svendson tied for 58th (237, +24).
Wichita State took the team title, finishing three strokes ahead of NM State at three-under-par 849.
NM State's fall season comes to an end next weekend. The Aggies will travel to Honolulu to compete in Hoakalei CC Invitational on Oct. 28-30, hosted by the University of Hawaii.
