Richardson Named FWAA Freshman All-American

Linebacker Devin Richardson is the first Aggie in program history to claim All-America honors as a freshman.

LAS CRUCES - Another Aggie All-American.

Linebacker Devin Richardson was named to the Football Writers Association of America-Shaun Alexander Freshman All-America Team on Monday. The native of Klein, Texas, was one of four linebackers listed on the 32-man team.

The redshirt freshman appeared in four games during his true freshman year in 2018 before blossoming with extended playing time during the 2019 season. He finished tied for third on the team in total tackles (69) in 10 games, missing the final two contests due to injury.

Richardson's 2.0 sacks were tied for second most on the team, and he led the Aggies in forced fumbles (3). He was the only freshman linebacker in the country to force three fumbles this year.

With the honor, Richardson becomes the 18th Aggie in program history to receive All-America recognition. He is the first freshman to capture the honor and earn praise from the FWAA.

He is the fourth Aggie linebacker to be named an All-American, joining Fredd Young (1983), Jimmy Cottrell (2005) and Rodney Butler (2016). It is also the second consecutive year that NM State has had an All-American. Running back Jason Huntley claimed fourth-team honors from Phil Steele in 2018.
