@NMStateSoftball Shuts Out #17 Arizona State

Aggies bounce back from loss to Wright State with 2-0 win over tournament host Arizona State.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Analise De La Roca and Felicia De La Torre combined to shutout #17 Arizona State in a 2-0 Aggie win in the second game of the Arizona State Invitational. The Aggies roped game one 11-3 to Wright State.

GAME ONE
The Aggies opened the Arizona State Invitational against Wright State. The Aggies got on the board in the top of the first after Matalasi Faapito drew a bases-loaded walk. However, NM State would not plate any more runs in the inning.

The Raiders then went off in the bottom half of the first innings, plating six runs to take a 6-1 lead. Faapito then recorded an RBI single in the third followed by a sacrifice fly from Chloe Rivas to trim the deficit to 6-3.

Wright State answered with three runs in the third before tacking on one more in the fourth for an 11-3 final.

GAME TWO
NM State took on 17th-ranked and tournament host Arizona State in the second game of the evening.

ASU got its leadoff batter aboard in the bottom half of the first and advanced her to second before De La Roca closed the door on the inning. De La Roca cruised from there but the NM State offense was held scoreless as well.

Then, the Aggies struck in the top of the fourth inning when Asa Vigil scored on an error by the ASU third baseman. NM State added one more run in the top of the fifth courtesy of an RBI single from Faapito that scored Jeanelle Medina.

It looked like Arizona State would get back into the game in the bottom of the sixth with runners on second and third with just one out. However, De La Torre stepped into the circle and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to slam the door on ASU's opportunity.

De La Torre then tossed a scoreless seventh inning to seal the Aggies' win over the #17 Sundevils. This was NM State's first win over a ranked opponent since a 10-6 win over #17 Kentucky on Feb. 20, 2018, in Las Cruces.

De La Roca tossed 5.1 scoreless innings while De La Torre added 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to combine for the Aggies' first shutout of the season.

UP NEXT
The Aggies continue their stay at the Arizona State Invitational with a game against Oregon State of the Pac-12 tomorrow, March 7, at 11:30 a.m.
