TUCSON, Ariz. - It's not how you start, but how you finish.
The Aggies concluded the Arizona Intercollegiate on a high note, firing the round's best team score on Wednesday at Sewailo Golf Club. New Mexico State came in at even-par 284 as a squad to close out the season-opening tournament.
Scott Rescigno led NM State's freshmen fivesome with a one-under-par 70 on the day. The Reno, Nev., native picked up four birdies along the way with three coming on the front nine.
Rescigno's nice showing put him at 14-over-par 227 for the tournament and in a tie for 69th place. He finished two strokes behind top Aggie finisher
Aidan Thomas, who concluded the tournament at 12-over-par 225 and in a tie for 53rd.
Matthew Jackman, meanwhile, finished in between Thomas and Rescigno. The Chorley, England, native wrapped up his first collegiate tournament at 13-over-par 226, tying for 59th place.
Mauricio Figueroa and
Trey Diehl both tied for 82nd, sitting at 19-over-par 232 after 54 holes of play. Figueroa's day was highlighted by knocking down three consecutive birdies on holes two, three and four before notching an eagle on the par-five eighth.
The Aggies finished in 17th place at 53-over-par 905 for the tournament. Host Arizona won the team title at two-under 850 and was led by individual champion Brad Reeves' four-under 209.
NM State will look to maintain its momentum from the final day in Arizona when it next returns to action at the All-American Intercollegiate. The tournament, hosted by Houston, is set for Feb. 14-16 at Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas.
