THE FIRST SERVE
• The destination for the NM State women's tennis team is Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Aggies are set to take on two teams from Utah over the course of two days.
• First up on the docket for NM State is a Thursday afternoon showdown with Pac-12 adversary Utah. First serve has been set for 1:00 p.m. from the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
• NM State will wrap up its two-match schedule in Utah by facing off against Big Sky Conference combatant Weber State Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
• Last week marked the start of the Aggies' 2021 schedule. NM State played host to the Pac-12's Arizona at the El Paso Swim & Tennis Center. Current in-state COVID-19 restrictions do not allow NM State to host any games within the state of New Mexico.
• The Aggies found themselves on the wrong end of a 6-1 decision against Arizona last Friday. Sophomore Chloe Gavino produced the team's lone point in the loss as she out-dueled the Wildcats' Talya Zandberg 6-4, 6-2 in second-flight singles play.
• Arizona won the double point to start the match off, but Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga were tied with the Wildcats' top-flight tandem of Kayla Wilkins and Gitte Heynemans 4-4 at the time the doubles competition ended.
SCOUTING UTAH | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATISTICS
• Like the Aggies, Utah started its spring 2021 season last weekend. The Utes played host to Idaho State last Saturday and emerged with a 7-0 win over the Bengals.
• Utah posted a 10-5 record which included an 0-2 showing in Pac-12 competitions before its spring 2020 season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• After serving as the team's dual match singles wins leader with a 9-2 record a season ago, Emily Dush has picked up right where she left off. Dush claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win in singles play against Idaho State last Saturday.
• Other key returners in singles play for the Utes include Anya Lamoreaux (8-1 in 2020) and Madeline Lamoreaux (5-7 in 2020).
• Dush and Madeline Lamoreaux represent the Utes' best returning doubles team from a season ago, too. Last spring the pair posted a 7-3 mark while competing exclusively in flight two.
SCOUTING WEBER STATE | ROSTER | SCHEDULE | STATISTICS
• Weber State heads to Salt Lake City in the hopes of picking up their first dual match wins of 2021. The Wildcats opened up their 2021 campaign on Saturday, Jan. 23, with a 6-1 setback at BYU.
• Behind a strong showing in doubles play, the Wildcats managed to jump out to a 1-0 lead courtesy of two wins in tandem action. BYU, however, swept all six singles bouts to earn the win.
• 2020 singles win leader Ana Morett Salas (9-2) is back for Weber State this season as is Yunna Ukita who posted an 8-2 record in singles play.
• Before the Wildcats' 2020 season came to a close as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, they had generated a record of 8-4 which included a 2-0 mark in Big Sky Conference action.
COMING UP NEXT
• The Aggies will enjoy a break of two weeks before their next non-conference action. On Friday, Feb. 19, NM State starts a two-match swing in the state of Texas when it heads to Nacogdoches to take on Southland Conference - and soon-to-be-WAC member - SFA at the Schlief Tennis Complex. First serve has been set for 1:00 p.m.
