DAVIS, Calif. - Another day, another narrow loss at the Golden State Invitational.
The NM State men's tennis team won a trio of singles matches, but it wasn't enough in its 4-3 non-conference setback at UC Davis Saturday afternoon.
DOUBLES
• Once again, NM State got off on the right foot in doubles action with Louis Menard and Petr Stavrovskij posting a 6-1 win on line three. Just like Friday, however, NM State saw that lead slip away.
• Martin Simecek and Corey Clarke narrowly missed out on a win in line two, dropping a 7-6 decision there. On the top line, Nicolas Buitrago and Jordy Visser were out-dueled in a 6-4 decision.
SINGLES
• NM State saw its deficit move to 3-0 after UC Davis picked up wins on lines three and four, but the Aggies began the process of battling back from there.
• Gijs Akkermans started the Aggies' comeback try by posting a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mitchell Davis on line six while Buitrago and Menard followed suit in the top two flights.
• Buitrago battled back from an early deficit in the second flight to earn a 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 win against Andrei Volgin. Like Buitrago, Menard worked his way out of an early hard place, too. The junior posted a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 come-from-behind victory over Ivan Thamma to knot the match at 3-3.
• That left the fifth flight to decide things. Clarke forced a third set with a 7-6 win in the middle frame against Arjith Jayaraman, but UC Davis' fifth-flight man had the last laugh. Clarke dropped the next set and fell 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
