Offense Leads Aggies to Two Wins at GCU Invitational

PHOENIX, Ariz. - The NM State softball team (12-13) pushed across 21 runs on 26 hits in a 6-3 win over Southern Utah and a 15-2 win over Idaho State at the GCU Invitational Saturday afternoon in Phoenix, Ariz.

Game One
The Aggie bats caught fire at just the right time, as they pushed across six runs in the final inning to erase a three-run deficit to defeat the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. Maya Martinez started off the seventh inning with a leadoff double, and she would score thanks to a Thunderbird error. A Hope Banales single scored Audrey Shebloski to cut the deficit to one and back-to-back singles from Hailey Tanori and Matalasi Faapito loaded the bases for Kayla Bowen. Bowen delivered with a ground ball right up the middle to give the Aggies the lead. A Ramsay Lopez double and a single from Shebloski extended the lead to 6-3 giving the Aggies some cushion.

Faapito retired the Thunderbirds in order to give the Aggies its 11th win of the year. Tanori led the way for the Aggies, as she went 4-for-4 in the batter's box and was one of eight Aggies to record a hit against the Thunderbirds' pitching.

Game Two
The Aggies continued its successful weekend in the batter's box in a 15-2 win over Idaho State in five innings. The Bengals struck first in the second inning, but the Aggies did not trail for long thanks to a three-RBI double from Shebloski in the second inning. The Aggies scored two more runs in the third inning thanks to a Nikki Butler single and a Tanori double. The Aggies then exploded for an eight-run fourth inning highlighted by a Faapito grand slam.

Felicia De La Torre picked up her sixth win of the year, as she allowed four hits and two runs in 3.1 innings. Chloe Rivas and Laurali Patane split relief duties, and they each held the Thunderbirds scoreless.

Faapito led the way in the batter's box going 2-for-2 with five RBIs. Shebloski added three RBIs while Tanori and Butler each added two RBIs.

The Aggies will finish off the weekend tomorrow morning against Idaho State at 10 a.m.
