Gavino Victorious in Singles Play, Aggies Fall 6-1 at Arizona

Sophomore secures second singles win over Wildcats this season

TUCSON, Ariz. - For the second-straight day, NM State earned a singles win against Arizona, but once again one victory was all the Aggies could muster in their 6-1 setback to the Wildcats Tuesday at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center.

DOUBLES
• Arizona claimed the doubles point for the second time in as many days in order to take a lead it never gave up. Miranda Bishard and Lucija Josipovic were out-dueled by a 6-1 tally on line three by the Wildcats' tandem of Abby Amos and Talya Zandberg to begin tandem play.
• The home team clinched the doubles point as Chloe Gavino and Bella Nguyen found themselves on the losing end of a 6-3 score against Kayla Wilkins and Gitte Heynemans in flight two action. Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga were trailing Jelena Lukic and Khim Iglupas 5-3 when play was halted.

SINGLES
• After Iglupas earned a win by retirement on line six, the Aggies found themselves in a 2-0 hole.
• NM State's deficit grew to 3-0 after Bishard's 6-2, 6-0 setback to Zandberg on line three. From there, the Wildcats picked up the match-clinching point in top-flight singles when Challa was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Lukic.
• Nguyen played things close with Heynemans in set one, but ultimately dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision.
• Gavino broke up the Wildcats' shutout bid in flight two play. After falling 6-2 in the opening set, Gavino bounced back with a 6-3 triumph in the middle frame to force a tiebreaking set. In the deciding set, Gavino came out strong and completed her come-from-behind win with a 1-0 (10-3) win.
• Gavino's bout wasn't the only one to go to a tiebreaker set. Kalaga forced a third set with Amos in flight four play, but fell 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).

COMING UP NEXT
• Hoping to keep their perfect WAC record unblemished, the Aggies head to Edinburg, Texas, for another two league bouts. NM State's two-match WAC swing at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center on the campus of UTRGV begins Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. when they take on Dixie State.
