NM State Suffers First WAC Loss, Falls 4-3 to Tarleton

Aggies win doubles point, but Texans take four singles bouts

EDINBURG, Texas - Trailing 3-1 with three singles matches remaining, the NM State women's tennis team battled back to knot things at 3-3, but Tarleton emerged as the 4-3 victor with a win on line four of one-on-one play as the Aggies dropped their first Western Athletic Conference match of the season Friday morning at the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center.

DOUBLES
• Able to collect an early lead, NM State came out strong in tandem action. The Aggies' third-flight pairing of Miranda Bishard and Lucija Josipovic scored a 6-3 victory over the Texans' duo of Elsa Boisson and Hadley Jones.
• Harsha Challa and Gavi Kalaga helped the Aggies clinch the doubles point minutes later. Their 6-3 triumph over Jemi Aguilar and Martha Makantasi in top-flight play helped NM State take a 1-0 lead headed into singles play.

SINGLES
• Tarleton quickly erased its deficit once one-on-one play got started. Josipovic's 6-1, 6-2 setback to Rose Watanabe in flight six play allowed the Texans to pull even.
• NM State fell behind 2-1 when Bishard fell 6-4, 6-2 to Makantasi on line three. The Aggies' saw their deficit grow to 3-1 following a Bella Nguyen's 6-4, 6-4 loss at the hands of Celia Vaudiau in fifth-flight play.
• The top part of the Aggies' lineup helped them get back into things. Chloe Gavino pulled her team within one points of Tarleton by securing a 7-5, 6-3 win over Aguilar in flight two action.
• Challa tied the match at 3-3 by posting a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Mihaela Codreanu in top-fight play.
• That left the decision in the hands of the fourth-flight showdown between Kalaga and Boisson. After falling behind with a 7-5 set one loss, Kalaga forced a decisive third frame with a 6-2 triumph in set two. Unfortunately, Boisson went on to win the set - and the match - with a 6-3 victory in the third frame.

COMING UP NEXT
• NM State (4-10, 3-1 WAC) will return to its home site of the NM State Tennis Complex for the remainder of the regular season. The Aggies' four-match home stand to wrap up the regular season starts Friday, April 9, at 3:00 p.m. when they host non-conference adversary Northern Arizona.
