SEATTLE, Wash. - The NM State softball team was unable to come back from a four-run deficit against Utah Valley Thursday afternoon at the WAC Tournament in Seattle, Wash. This is the first time the Aggies have dropped its opening game in the WAC Tournament since 2014 when they also lost to Utah Valley in Seattle.
The Wolverines struck first in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, but Matalasi Faapito kept the Wolverines lead at one. The Aggie bats began to heat up in the bottom of third inning with three singles on three straight pitches to tie the game. Ramsay Lopez doubled off the wall in center to give the Aggies the 2-1 lead. Neither team was able to muster a hit in the fourth inning, but the Wolverines used some small ball to kickstart a five-run fifth inning.
The Aggies inched closer when Maya Martinez hit her 10th home run of the season to cut the Wolverines' lead to two. The Aggies pushed one run across in the seventh thanks to a Gabby Aragon single. Martinez was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Aggies left them juiced, ending the game.
Lopez and Faapito each had solid days for the Aggies as the two went 5-for-8 combined with two RBIs.
The Aggies will now play the loser of Seattle U/Grand Canyon tomorrow at 2 p.m. in an elimination game. Check back to nmstatesports.com or follow the Aggies on Twitter (@NMStateSoftball), Instagram (@nmstatesoftball) and Facebook (NM State Softball) for updates throughout the tournament.
