| By:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Redshirt freshman Matalasi Faapito was named one of the 15 finalists for the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division I Freshman of the Year on Thursday morning.

The Temecula, Calif., native has put together one of the more unique seasons ever in college softball. Faapito is the only player in Division I to hit at least 16 home runs and strike out 60 batters. She recorded the program's first no-hitter in a decade on Apr. 16 against Tarleton State. In the batter's box, Faapito leads the WAC in home runs (16), slugging percentage (.814), on-base percentage (.476) and total bases (118). Her 16 home runs is tied for 19th in the nation. Faapito ended the season with a .400 average and 34 RBIs.

Faapito and the Aggies will take the field this evening against Utah Valley in the first game of the WAC Tournament. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.
