Aggies Win Thriller to Advance to WAC Championship Game

SEATTLE, Wash. - Freshman shortstop Jayleen Burton fired a throw to home plate, and Nikki Butler made the tag for the final out to give the Aggies a thrilling 4-3 victory over Utah Valley Friday night in the WAC Tournament. The Aggies advanced to the championship game tomorrow where they will have to beat Seattle U twice to secure the WAC title.

With a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning, the Wolverines were on the verge of putting together a two-out rally. After a double to put the runner on second, the Wolverines were able to get an infield single. The runner from second rounded third, but Burton made a great throw to home plate, and Butler made the tag in plenty of time.

The Aggies began the game off the right foot as Butler hit her second home run of the tournament that scored Hailey Tanori and Ramsay Lopez to give the Aggies the quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Aggies added another run in the second off a sacrifice fly from Matalasi Faapito. Faapito was great in the circle through three inning allowing just one hit. The Wolverines struck for three runs in the fourth, but Chloe Rivas came in and shut the Wolverines down in the final three innings. Rivas struck out four batters in the final three innings and did not allow a single run.

Lopez led the way in the batter's box with two hits. Butler tallied three RBIs while Faapito tallied one RBI.

The Aggies will now compete in its 10th consecutive WAC Championship Game. Tomorrow's game is set for 1 p.m. with the if necessary game taking place 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Both games will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.
