Zhu Scores Second Singles Win in NM State's 5-2 Loss at UT Arlington

Gavino posts first spring singles triumph as Aggies drop to 0-4

ARLINGTON, Texas - Lisa Zhu was a winner in singles play for the second-straight match, but her point was one of just two generated by the NM State women's tennis team as the Aggies dropped a 5-2 decision at UT Arlington Sunday morning.

NM State remained winless in 2022 at 0-4 while UT Arlington hiked its undefeated mark to 3-0 in spring dual match action.

• Down in third-flight action, Natsuki Nishimura and Bella Nguyen won just a single game in their 6-1 setback to the Mavericks' Carla Pons and Nika Novikova.
• UT Arlington grabbed the doubles point by way of a 6-2 loss suffered by Chloe Gavino and Gavi Kalaga on line two. That NM State duo was defeated by Momoka Horiguchi and Ana Paula Jimenez.

SINGLES
• Georgia Townsend lined up against Paula Jimenez in line six of singles action, but dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to put NM State at a 2-0 disadvantage.

• Top-flight singles was where UT Arlington sealed the win. In that tilt, Challa couldn't get much going in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Liz Chileno.
• The matchup between NM State and the future WAC member continued and it was on line three where Zhu picked up the visitors' first team point of the day. Her 6-1, 6-3 win over Pons was the second-straight one-on-one victory for the freshman out of Beijing, China.
• Kalaga won a total of four games in her 6-3, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Sarina Reinertsen in flight five.
• Gavino ended the match with a three-set win over Horiguchi on line two. After claiming the first set via a 7-5 tally, Gavino was forced to play a decisive third set after Horiguchi was a 6-4 victor in the middle frame. Gavino, though, got the job done with a 10-7 triumph in the final frame to score her first singles win of the spring.
