LAS CRUCES, N.M. – After the opening day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, the NM State men's golf team has a comfortable lead. Play was suspended due to a lack of sunlight and will resume at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday. Only two teams, California Baptist and Weber State, did not complete Monday's second round.
The Aggies hold a 13-shot lead over second place Western New Mexico entering the final round. Shooting a 271 (-13) in the second round, NM State torched through the home course on Monday.
Garrison Smith leads all players through the first day, shooting a 133 (-9). From Texas A&M – Commerce, Nathan McCullouch sits rit on Smith's tail, shooting a 134 on Monday.
Aidan Thomas,
Alexandre Bauduin, and
Javier Delgadillo each join Smith inside the top-ten. Thomas leads the NM State trio, shooting 138 (-4), which was good for fourth. Bauduin remains right on Thomas' heels with a 139 (-3) on the opening day. In the second round, Bauduin fired a career-best 67 (-4) to shoot up the leaderboard.
Delgadillo also looks to card his first collegiate top-ten finish after finishing Monday tied for eighth. The freshman from El Paso carded a 69 (-2), highlighted by three birdies in a four-hole stretch.
Round One Notes
- Garrison Smith birdied five times in the opening round for a 67 (-4)
- All but one Aggie birdied at least three holes in the round.
- Javier Delgadillo and Aidan Thomas both shot par or better in the first round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
- Delgadillo birded three times between holes 12 and 17, highlighted by a chip-in on 16.
Round Two Notes
- Javier Delgadillo carded his second career eagle on hole 12.
- Garrison Smith and Aidan Thomas combined to birdie ten times between holes 10 and 14.
- Smith leads all players at the end of day one. After 36 holes, Smith is nine under par.
- Thomas, Delgadillo, and Alexandre Bauduin all remain inside the top-ten after two rounds.
- Playing as individuals, Lance Christensen and Joseph Robson both finish day one inside the top 25.
- No player has birdied more than Smith, who has 12. Bauduin is tied for second with nine.
- Robson is tied for the lead among all players with 28 pars in the opening 36 holes.
