NM State Drops Home Battle with Pacific by 5-2 Score

Aggies win doubles point, but Tigers come up big in singles play

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A strong start by the NM State women's tennis team fell by the wayside as Pacific made use of singles wins to grab a 5-2 win at the NM State Tennis Center Friday afternoon.

DOUBLES
• Coming out of the gates swinging, NM State gained the upper hand early on with some strong play in tandem action.
Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen came up with a 6-4 win over Danielle Zamora and Megan Carmichael to get things started.
• With their teammates on line three giving them a boost with a win, Gavi Kalaga and Natsuki Nishimura finished the job in flight two action. NM State's middle flight pairing defeated Cindy Ung and Alexis Sam by a score of 6-4 to give NM State the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.

SINGLES
• Pacific battled back once singles play got going. The Tigers evened up the match at one point apiece after Georgia Townsend dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Sam on line six.
• The Tigers grabbed the lead with a win in top-flight play. Chloe Gavino secured just four games in her 6-2, 6-2 loss at the hands of Miaangelina Ruja.
• Trailing 2-1, NM State got a big point from Kalaga on line four to even things up once again. Kalaga got by Zamora, 7-5, 6-1, to help the Aggies tie the match at 2-2.
• Kalaga's point was NM State's last one of the day, though. All three of the last three matches in play went to three sets, but all three of those matches went to Pacific.
Lisa Zhu started out strong in her flight two matchup with Klara Kosan, but dropped her last two sets. Kosan broke the 2-2 tie and gave Pacific a 3-2 lead with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.
• Like Zhu, Nishimura grabbed control of things early but couldn't maintain her grip on her singles bout. NM State's junior fell 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 against Zoe Clydesdale-Eberle, a result that clinched the match for the Tigers.
• Nguyen and Carmichael went to three sets down on flight five, but a third-set win by Pacific's player ended things. Carmichael secured a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 win to close out the match.

COMING UP NEXT
• NM State travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., for another non-conference matchup. Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. MT, the Aggies take on Northern Arizona at the NAU Tennis Center.
