NM State Suffers Defeat to Conclude Five-Game Stretch at Boyd Gaming Classic

Aggies record three hits in defeat.

LAS VEGAS – NM State fell in its final outing of the weekend as Washington defeated the Aggies, 14-0, in five innings on Sunday morning.

Felicia De La Torre got the start in the circle for the Aggies while Kelley Lynch started the game for Washington and, ultimately, threw her second complete game of the season. On a day in which hits were hard to come by for the Aggies, only Kayla Bowen, Melika Ofoia and Jayleen Burton recorded hits for the Crimson and White. Meanwhile, De La Torre earned a pair of strikeouts while giving up three hits in 1.1 innings. Laurali Patane was the Aggies' most effective pitcher as she allowed zero runs and zero hits in 1.1 innings.

FIRST INNING
NM State starter De La Torre opened the game by getting two of the first three batters to pop up, however, she also walked three of the first five to load the bases. Kayla Bowen then came into the circle as De La Torre shifted over to first base. With the bases loaded, Washington's Olivia Johnson singled to bring two runners across and take an early lead.

The Huskies then got a single off the bat of Brooke Nelson that scored two more to give UW a 4-0 lead with the Aggies in search of a third out. However, Washington continued to do two-out damage as a Sami Reynolds single brought in two more runs to put the Aggies in a 6-0 hole. Bowen eventually got the Huskies' No. 2 hitter to line out and end the top half of the first.

In the bottom half, Aggie leadoff Ramsay Lopez reached base after being hit by a Kelly Lynch pitch, giving the Aggies their first base runner of the morning. Lopez then was able to advance to second on a wild pitch during Maya Martinez's at-bat before Martinez put a ball in play that moved Lopez over to third but left the Aggies with just one out to work with. Unfortunately, Washington would get the third out and leave Lopez stranded at third – ending the inning with a 6-0 lead.

SECOND INNING
Washington's Madison Huskey used the first at-bat of the inning to hit a ball through the left side of the infield and reach first base. Huskey then stole second to move into scoring position during the following at-bat. After De La Torre struck out Jenn Cummings, Megan Vandergrift hit a double to left field that would bring across Huskey and the seventh run for the home side.

De La Torre then got the best of Olivia Johnson in a nine-pitch at-bat as she struck out the Husky hitter. With two outs, the next Washington batter was put on base via a walk before an Angie Yellen single loaded the bases for the second time in the game. Another base given on balls would bring across run number eight for Washington.

Jordin King then entered the circle for the first time in the game, however, a pair of UW runners came across to score and put the Huskies up 10-0 after a pair of pitches reached the backstop. King would eventually get the Aggies out of the inning as she forced Sami Reynolds to fly out to center field.

Riley Carley led off the inning for the Aggies in the second and reached base in identical fashion to how Lopez reached first – being hit by a pitch. Once Carley was aboard, Kathy Rodolph brought in the speedy Madison Muxen to pinch run for Carley. Jillian Taylor also reached base in the next at bat as she watched four balls go by on just five pitches. The next Aggie action came as Jayleen Burton blooped one into short left field to load the bases for NM State. However, a Washington double play would end the inning.

THIRD INNING
After entering to end the second, Jordin King remained in the circle in the third inning. The freshman from Pomona, Calif., made quick work of the inning as the Huskies went three up, three down with a fly out to center and a pair of pop outs to Kayla Bowen at first base. This also came in just nine pitches from the right-hander.

For the third-straight inning, the Aggie leadoff reached base as Ramsay Lopez walked in her second plate appearance of the day – reaching base for the second time. Washington retired the next two batters before Kayla Bowen had the second NM State hit of the day when she doubled down the left field line to put a pair of Aggies in scoring position. However, Lynch would get Carley to pop out to conclude the inning.

FOURTH INNING
After Washington pinch hitter Kinsley Fielder singled to put a Husky runner on the base paths, Olivia Johnson hit a two-run home run to increase the UW lead to 12-0. After two more Husky batters reached base via a walk and a single, Washington added a run following a pass ball. Baylee Klingler then hit a double that scored the runner from third and allow the Huskies to go ahead 14-0. Klingler would also be the final batter Jordin King would face as Laurali Patane got the ball in the top of the fourth. Patane would then get Huskey to fly out to right field to bring up the bottom half of the inning.

Melika Ofoia came in to pinch hit in the fourth inning and immediately did damage as she doubled into right field to put an Aggie in scoring position with just one out down. However, Washington's Lynch was able to put away the next two NM State batters and leave the Aggies trailing 14-0 after four.

FIFTH INNING
Patane continued into the fifth inning for the Aggies as she got the first two Washington batters to ground out to first base before walking the fourth batter she faced on the day. She then got Brooke Nelson to ground out to retire the side.

Unfortunately, only three more Aggie batters would come to the plate as Lynch ended the inning and, ultimately, the game in the next 10 pitches.

UP NEXT
The meeting with Washington wrapped up the Aggies' stay in Vegas as they now return to their home state for a double header on Tuesday, March 8, in Albuquerque, N.M. against New Mexico. First pitch of the opening game is scheduled for 2 p.m. MT.
