SEATTLE - The NM State women's tennis team had little trouble picking up its first WAC West Division win of 2022, scoring a 6-1 triumph over Dixie State Friday at the Championship Field Tennis Courts on the campus of Seattle U.
Though the Aggies took on a trio of WAC teams last weekend, those matches did not count in the league standings as NM State's opponents were in the league's Southwest Division. Only matches between teams in the same division will count as conference matches.
DOUBLES
• NM State got started in dominant fashion thanks to the line two tandem of Gavi Kalaga and Natsuki Nishimura. That twosome scored a 6-0 shutout win against the Trailblazers' duo of Alexandra Hildreth and Ya-Chi Hsu.
• Miranda Bishard and Bella Nguyen extended their doubles winning streak to two matches and clinched the doubles point for their team, too, by way of a 6-4 win over Jane Dorny and Sabrina Longson.
• One of the best doubles teams in the way closed out a clean sweep of tandem play for the Aggies. Chloe Gavino and Lisa Zhu downed Juliana Honczaruk and Rachel Mellor by a 6-4 score to pick up their team-leading ninth doubles win of 2022.
SINGLES
• NM State rarely faltered once one-on-one play got rolling. Gavino rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 top-flight win against Alexandra Hildreth to run her winning streak to two matches.
• Like her top-flight teammate, Zhu cruised to a victory on line two. The freshman posted a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hsu to put the Aggies on the cusp of their first WAC win of the season. Zhu's team-leading 10th singles victory of 2022 pushed her winning streak to six consecutive matches.
• Kalaga clinched NM State's win down on line four, taking down Longson by a 6-3, 6-2 tally.
• The Aggies' shutout hopes were kept alive by Nishimura up on line three. She surrendered just three games to Honczaruk en route to a 6-1, 6-2 win which hiked NM State's lead to 5-0.
• Picking up her first dual match singles win of 2022 down on line six was Georgia Townsend. Her 6-2, 6-4 win against Angelina Amelkina pushed the Aggies' advantage to 6-0.
• Dixie State broke up NM State's shutout bid after Nguyen suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Mellor in flight five action.
