PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Aggies took to the diamond Saturday afternoon to close their three-game series against Grand Canyon, falling to the 'Lopes 14-6. The Crimson & White jumped out to a 6-1 run after an inning and a half, but couldn't hold on.
Ramsay Lopez led the way for the Aggie offense, going 1-3 on the day with a home run and four runs batted in.
Jordin King (6-12) got the starting nod for the Aggies, going 3.0 innings, allowing eight earned runs on six hits with a strikeout.
Ariel Thompson (16-3) started in the circle for the 'Lopes, pitching 2.0 innings allowing six runs on four hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
FIRST INNING
The Aggies scored the first run of the game for the first time this weekend thanks to an unsuccessful throw home by Grand Canyon on a fielder's choice. After a
Kayla Bowen groundout moved a pair of runners into scoring position,
Hannah Lindsay came up to the plate, hitting a single to left field scoring
Gabby Aragon and giving NM State an early 2-0 lead.
Paige Knight came up to bat next, hitting into another fielder's choice, scoring
Ramsay Lopez from third and putting the Crimson & White on top 3-0.
Grand Canyon did not wait long to respond, scoring their first run of the afternoon off a Katelyn Dunckel triple followed by a sac bunt by Stephanie Reed to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
SECOND INNING
Riley Carley drew a walk to leadoff the second inning and
Jayleen Burton singled to left field to put s pair of runners on the basepath with no outs. Tanori hit into a fielder's choice, leaving Burton and Tanori on first and second with one out. With two outs and two on,
Ramsay Lopez stepped into the batter's box and crushed it to left center for her 13
th home run of the season, putting the Aggies ahead 6-1.
A leadoff walk and a triple put another run on the board for the 'Lopes, before an error by the Aggies scored their second run of the inning to make it a 6-3 affair.
THIRD INNING
The Aggies went three up, three down, held scoreless for the first time.
Grand Canyon capitalized on a pair of wild pitches and a second Aggie error, scoring two runs to make it a one-run game, 6-5. A two-run triple by Kristin Fifield gave the 'Lopes their first lead of the afternoon before a sacrifice hit scored her from third to grow the 'Lopes lead 8-6.
FOURTH INNING
NM State failed to produce a run for the second straight inning.
A bunt single by Grand Canyon turned into a runner on third following the third NM State error of the afternoon, a pair of doubles put two runs on the board and extended the 'Lopes lead 10-6. A two-run homer to right field made it a 12-6 affair.
FIFTH INNING
A solo home run and an RBI single put two on the board for the 'Lopes, ending the game with a final score of 14-6.
