TULSA, Okla. – A sluggish first day at The Clerico, hosted by Oral Roberts, will put NM State men's golf in a tough position when the final round tees off on Tuesday. The Aggies shot 36-over as a team on Monday, carding a 596. Entering the final round in twelfth place, NM State trailed the leaders Little Rock by 36 strokes.
Vari Mariscal paced NM State in the opening round, firing a one-over 71. Mariscal birdied a team-high five times throughout the round, including three on the front nine to make the turn at one-under.
Javier Delgadillo and
Alexandre Bauduin both got off to strong starst on the course, finishing his first nine holes of the day combining for an even par. Both Aggies sank birdies on 18 before making the turn for the front nine.
Delgadillo posted the Aggies' best round in the afternoon, firing a 72 (+2) with a team-high four birdies. The four birdies from the El Paso native was more than the rest of the Aggies combined, who saw a pair from
River Smalley and one from
Alvaro Morales.
Smalley saw some success on the front half of the course throughout the afternoon, going two-under over his final seven holes of the day.
On Tuesday, NM State will be paired with South Alabama and Missouri State, who remain tied for tenth place. The Aggies trail the two schools by seven strokes entering the final round.
