Garrison Smith matched his career-best 64 (-8) in opening round

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – After one round, Garrison Smith leads the field by two strokes at the 2023 WAC Men's Golf Championships in Boulder City, Nevada. As a team, NM State remains in second place, trailing only Sam Houston. On Friday, the Aggies shot 277 (-11) as a team and will enter Saturday just three shots behind the Bearkats.
 
For the second time in his career, Smith fired a 64 in the opening round of the WAC Championships. In 2021, Smith went eight-under in the first round before shooting a 210 (-6) for the tournament, finishing in third. Smith needed just thirty strokes to get through the back nine, carding a score of six-under. Following Friday's round, Smith sits alone in first place.
 
Heading into the second round, Javier Delgadillo will remain in the top ten as well, firing a 69 (-3). The freshman from El Paso finished the back nine at two-under, highlighted by an eagle on the par five thirteenth hole. Entering Saturday's second round, Delgadillo will be
 
Looking to build on previous success in the WAC Championships, Aidan Thomas was the third Aggie to post a score that was under par. In two previous showings at the conference tournament, Thomas has finished inside the top five both times. On Friday, Thomas shot a 71 (-1) which put him in a tie for sixteenth place.
