Aggie Men Finish Among Top Five at Border Olympics

Sophomore Mateo Payán places T11 to lead all Aggies.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The NM State men's golf team wrapped up the Border Olympics on Tuesday afternoon, shooting a combined 9-over for the week to place tied for fifth among a deep field which included a ranked Houston squad among other top Texas talent.
 
Individually, the Aggies were led by sophomore Mateo Payán who recorded the sixth top-25 finish of his career after shooting even par over the course of the 54-hole event at Laredo Country Club. Payán was followed by teammates Jackson Funkhouser and Javier Delgadillo, who each placed in a tie for 18th, shooting 3-over for the week.
 
Meanwhile, Max Chan served as the fourth Aggie to appear on the leaderboard as he shot 6-over to record a finish of 34th. Kostak Horno, who competed as an individual, finished 46th, while defending Border Olympics Champion Ethan Klose rounded out the group of Aggies, finishing in 50th.
 
NUMBERS OF NOTE
  • Mateo Payán posted the second top-15 placement of his sophomore season and recorded his best finish at a tournament since the season opener.
  • Payán also finished tied for first among the 76-man field in par-3 scoring as he closed out the event at 2-under on the par 3s.
  • Jackson Funkhouser made his first tournament appearance as an Aggie and managed his best score (71, E) in round three to tally the first top-20 finish of his career.
  • Like Payán, Javier Delgadillo put forth his best performance of the season since the opener.
  • As a team, the Aggies ranked third in par-3 scoring (3.12) and tied for third in par-5 scoring (4.76).
