Aggies Power Past LA Tech to Finish Perfect Conference Opening Weekend

Complete team effort lifts the Aggies to a sweep in their opening CUSA weekend

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - NM State closed out its opening weekend of Conference USA play with a strong, all‑around performance on Sunday, defeating LA Tech to complete a three‑game sweep. The Aggies struck early with a three‑run first inning, added insurance in the middle frames, and relied on dominant work in the circle to stay in control throughout. With the win, NM State improved to 3–0 in league play to open its conference slate. 

Game – NM State 7, LA Tech 1 

The Aggies established momentum immediately as Devin Elam led off with a single, Faith Aragon followed with a two‑run home run, and Johnna Aragon added an RBI single to make it 3–0 after one. Kendal Lunar doubled home Faith Aragon in the second, and NM State extended the lead further in the fifth with RBI hits from Skye JohnsonTamara Carranza, and Johnna Aragon. In the circle, Faith Aragon controlled the game from start to finish, striking out nine and yielding only six hits and one run. 

NOTABLES 

  • Faith Aragon delivered a complete‑game win with nine strikeouts and also went 3‑for‑4 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and three runs scored. 

  • Johnna Aragon finished 2‑for‑3 with two RBIs, producing run‑scoring singles in both the first and fifth innings. 

  • Skye Johnson logged two hits and an RBI, including the first of three run‑scoring knocks in the fifth. 

  • Kendal Lunar doubled home a run in the second inning and reached base twice. 

  • Tamara Carranza added an RBI single and a stolen base during the fifth‑inning scoring burst. 

  • Devin Elam collected two hits, including the leadoff single that set the tone in the opening frame. 

NEXT UP 

NM State now shifts its focus to one of its marquee rivalry matchups as the Aggies welcome the University of New Mexico for the Battle of I‑25. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10 at the NM State Softball Complex, marking the first meeting of the season between the in‑state foes.
