Biography

Junior (2013-14): Van Der Ben ended her season with a 6-13 record in singles and a 3-12 record in doubles tennis. Highlighting her year were four wins in a row in singles matches against Pacific University (Feb. 9), Lamar University (Feb. 14), Northern Arizona (Feb. 16) and Southern Miss (Feb. 21). During the win streak, Van Der Ben picked up the victories in straight sets at the No. 3 position and one at the No. 4 position.  Two of her doubles victories also came against Lamar and Southern Miss.  Van Der Ben earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Award for the second straight year.  She was also named to the Academic All-WAC list for the 2014 season.

 

Sophomore (2012-13): Van Der Ben finished the 2012-13 season with a 6-14 record during the spring season. She picked up two victories at the No. 2 spot and four the third court. When the Aggies faced No. 17 Tarleton State, Van Der Ben worked to a 6-0, 6-3 win at the second position, helping the Aggies to a 5-2 win. She earned each of her victories in straight sets and picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win over her opponent from Rio Grande rival, New Mexico. Two of Van Der Ben’s singles wins came over WAC opponents. She picked up a win over Seattle U and Utah State, both at the No. 3 spot.

Playing the majority of the season with senior Jodie Williams in doubles, the duo went 1-3 at the No. 1 court and 2-3 at No. 2. The pair worked for an 8-5 win over the pair from 59th-ranked Denver in the regular-season finale. Van Der Ben also collected four double victories with partner Annemieke Witte during March of 2013. Wins over Western New Mexico, 17th-ranked Tarleton State and WAC foe Seattle moved Van Der Ben’s season total wins to six. Academically, Van der Ben was named to the ITA Scholar Athlete list and helped the team earn Academic All-America status for the last six years.

Freshman (2011-12): Van Der Ben finished her first season at NM State with a 10-10 singles record.  She played her first match of the season at the No. 1 position and played the rest of her singles matches at the No. 2 spot.  Van Der Ben's season was highlighted by two 6-0, 6-0 victories, once versus Ynez Sanchez of UT Permian Basin (Feb. 26) and again versus Nikolina Vukadin of Western New Mexico (Apr. 18).  Van Der Ben also won her final regular-season match of the season in straight sets over Maria Sablina of in-state rival New Mexico. 

Van Der Ben also participated in 13 doubles matches during her freshman year, finishing with an overall 6-7 record.  Her first seven doubles matches were with partner Manon Sylvain.  The duo finished with a 5-2 record, including going 1-1 at the No. 1 position and 4-1 at the No. 2 spot.  Van Der Ben and Sylvain won their final three matches together.  Van Der Ben then proceeded to partner up with Ros-Poly Nguyen for two matches, winning one match over UT Permian Basin (Feb. 26) by a final score of 8-1.  Van Der Ben finished her doubles season by playing alongside Annemieke Witte for her final four doubles matches.

Prior to NM State: Van Der Ben was consistently ranked as junior player in The Netherlands. She was ranked No. 2 in both the under-14 and under-16 groups as she progressed in her career. Her senior rankings were No. 40 in doubles and No. 63 in singles. Van Der Ben also placed among the top 10 at the junior championships and won the A Circuit in her home country.

Personal: Van Der Ben is the daughter of Jan and Joselyn Alejo-Van Der Ben and calls Alphen in The Netherlands home. Van Der Ben is a community health major. Prior to NM State: Van Der Ben was consistently ranked as junior player in The Netherlands. She was ranked No. 2 in both the under-14 and under-16 groups as she progressed in her career.
