2006 (Senior): Bernard played and started in 12 games at defensive back during 2006. He was fifth on the team in tackles with 50, 32 solo and 18 assisted. He tallied five tackles-for-a-loss of 14 yards in the year and accumulated nine pass break-ups. Against San Jose State (11/4) he recorded a season-high 10 tackles. During the first game of the season against Southeastern Louisiana (8/31) he made his first quarterback sack (1.0-5). Against No.15 Boise State (10/15) on ESPN, he tallied eight tackles, six solo and two assisted and had two tackles for-a-loss-of four tackles. He also recorded an interception for 15 yards against Texas Southern (9/16). Aggies final game of the season against Louisiana Tech (12/2) was his most productive game of the year. He tallied six tackles, was one tackle-for-a-loss-of one yard, recorded one interception and blocked two passes. He also had a season-high three pass breaks against New Mexico (9/9).
2005 (Junior): Bernard played in 10 games for the Aggies, starting three games at strong safety. On the season, Bernard tallied 39 tackles, a forced fumble, two interceptions and two pass break-ups. Versus Idaho Bernard recorded a career-high 12 tackles, including an interception in overtime. Over the three games that he started Bernard recorded 29 tackles, including eight against Nevada (11/12) and nine versus San Jose State (11/19). Bernard also recorded five tackles and a pass break-up versus Hawai’i (10/15) as well as forcing a fumble.
2004 (Sophomore): Bernard played in 11 games for NMSU in the corner back position. Bernard recorded 23 tackles on the season, including a career-high four tackles against Florida Atlantic (11/13). He also collected three tackles against New Mexico (9/24), UL Lafayette (10/9) and Florida International (10/30). Bernard recorded one pass break up against Arkansas (9/4).
2003 (Freshman): Bernard was a redshirt his first season at New Mexico State.
High School: Alex was named the outstanding offensive back for Mayfield High School after the 2002 season. He also earned that honor in 2001. In his senior year he rushed for 1,846 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also had 14 receptions for 246 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield reached the Class 5A state title game his junior and senior seasons.
Personal: Alex was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and is majoring in Chemical Engineering.
