Aggies, Oh Aggies!
Steve Irvin

Steve Irvin

Irvin began his tenure with the Aggies in the spring of 2024 and will serve as the program’s cornerbacks coach this upcoming season. His stint with NM State and 26th year in the collegiate ranks begins after serving on staff at Hawai’i for one season as the Rainbow Warriors’ cornerbacks coach.

Prior to his stop in Hawai’i, he coached at San Diego for his second of two stints with the Toreros. This assignment spanned from 2020-22 with Irvin serving as USD’s linebackers coach.

The former UNLV student-athlete and longtime college coach rejoined the Toreros after spending two seasons at his alma mater coaching cornerbacks from 2018 to 2019.

Before becoming only the third UNLV player to also coach at the school, Irvin was the Toreros’ defensive coordinator for five seasons (2013-17) and cornerbacks coach for two (2011-12). He helped the Toreros win the PFL six times in his seven total years and reach the FCS Playoffs twice. In 2016, USD had the PFL’s No. 1 ranked defense while in 2016 and 2017, the team was first in the league in scoring defense.

In addition to USD and UNLV, Irvin has coached at Texas State (2008-10; cornerbacks coach), Montana State (2006; assistant secondary coach) and San Diego State (2002-05). He began his coaching career at College of the Desert in 1999, meaning he has served as a college football coach for 22 years and mentored nearly every position on the defensive side of the ball.

Irvin played two years of football at UNLV (1997-98) where he competed at linebacker. He earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from UNLV in 1999 and went on to earn his master’s in education from San Diego State in 2004.

A native of Las Vegas out of Eldorado High School, Irvin began his collegiate career at the College of the Desert, where he earned All-Conference honors in 1995. He played one season at Division II Quincy University in Illinois before returning to UNLV.
