Biography

2004: Smith enters his second season with NMSU as the team’s starting punter.

2003: Smith started the season as a backup, but started the final nine games of the season. He averaged 39.2 yards per kick, forcing six fair catches and had just four touchbacks in 38 attempts. He had four punts inside the 20 and two punts of 50 yards or more. He averaged 46 yards per punt on two kicks against Idaho (10/4). He had a career-long of 54 yards against UL Lafayette (10/16) and had another punt downed inside the 20-yard line. Smith averaged 43.2 yards per kick on four punts against Middle Tennessee (10/11) including one inside the 20-yard line, forced two fair catches and had a long punt of 48 yards. He had at least one punt of 45 yards in nine of the 10 games he played in.

2001-02 (Junior College): Smith helped Trinity Valley to a 10-2 record and a 33-22 win over Jones County Junior College in the Heart of Texas Bowl in 2002. Smith averaged 40.7 yards per kick on 42 attempts and had a long punt of 56 yards. He finished second in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference in punting in 2002. He averaged 39 yards per kick as a freshman. Smith earned academic all-America honors as a sophomore at Trinity Valley.

High School: Smith was a two-year starter at punter at Duncanville. He averaged 41 yards per kick as a junior and 39.5 as a senior. He helped Duncanville advance to the Class 5A Division I state semifinals his senior year.

Personal: Steven was born in Edmond, Oklahoma and is the son of Micki and Lori Smith. He is majoring in Communications.
