Biography

Junior (2008-09): Salas along with teammate Roman Stoisavljevic were named first team all-WAC, becoming just the sixth Aggie doubles team in school history to earn first team all-conference honors. They posted a 13-8 doubles record together, all at the No. 1 position and had two victories over ranked opponents. The first came on March 6 over No. 17 Arizona’s 56th-ranked doubles pair of Pat Metham and Ravid Hazi, 8-2, and the second was over the 37th-ranked duo of Rudolf Siwy and Mirko Zapletal from No. 46 Fresno State, 9-8. Salas and Stoisavljevic posted a 4-2 WAC record in 2009. In singles play, Salas had the highest winning percentage on the team, as he posted a 9-2 record playing mainly at No. 6, where he was 6-2. Salas went 4-1 in league matches and won three-straight matches on three different occasions, including his last three matches of the season. All but won of his wins in 2009 came in straight sets and he won his only three-set match. In the fall tournament season, Salas went 3-8 in singles matches to give him an overall 12-10 record in 2008-09. He and Stoisavljevic went 8-5 in fall doubles action, all while being ranked No. 30 nationally. From Feb. 19 through March 3, the two went 2-1 while ranked No. 56 in the ITA national doubles rankings.

 

Sophomore (2007-08): Salas and teammate Roman Stoisavljevic became just the second NMSU doubles team to earn All-WAC honors, as they were selected to the second team after going 11-9 together at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The duo were ranked nationally for two weeks at No. 52, becoming the first Aggie doubles team in the rankings since the end of the 2000 season. Salas and Stoisavljevic saw their berth in the ITA rankings come after they defeated the nation’s second-ranked doubles team of Christian Rojmar and Bojan Szumanski from Texas Tech on Feb. 24. Salas won his first five singles matches of the dual match season and he was one of four Aggies to win 10 or more singles matches on the year. He also won both of his WAC regular season matches over his opponents from Idaho and Utah State. Salas finished the spring with a 10-6 record, going 1-0 at No. 4, 8-6 at No. 5 and 1-0 at No. 6. Combining the fall and spring seasons, he had a 18-12 singles record and a 19-11 doubles record.

 

Freshman (2006-07): Salas joined the Aggies in the spring where he saw action across the single board. He was just the third NM State player to gain 10 or more singles victories, as he went 10-11 in the dual match season. He was 2-2 at the No. 3 position, 3-5 at No. 4, 0-2 at the fifth spot and 5-2 at No. 6. Salas went 3-1 against conference opponents, including his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nevada’s Arzhang Derakhshani in the 2007 WAC Championships. He also won his doubles match at the conference championships, a 8-6 victory at the No. 2 spot with teammate Roman Stoisavljevic. He won six out of his last eight singles matches to close out his freshman campaign. In doubles action, Salas compiled a 7-11 overall record. He went 3-4 with Alejandro de Mucha, 0-3 with Gustave Diep, 1-3 with Brice Magnanou and was 3-1 with Stoisavljevic.

 

Prior to NM State: Salas won the doubles national championship three times as a junior in Mexico. He won two ITF tournaments and was ranked the second best player in his last year of 18-and-unders before coming to New Mexico State. Salas graduated from Centro Educatino Cocoyoc High School.

 

Personal: Salas is the son of Lizabeth Morlin Gomes and Armando Salas Elicondo.
