Biography
2017-18: Spring: Helped guide NM State to its third WAC Tournament title in four years and fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history…garnered Second-Team All-WAC honors in doubles after going 12-5 overall with teammate Louis Menard and 3-1 in conference play…named to the WAC All-Tournament team in singles as well as the doubles with Menard...earned the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team for District 7 as selected by CoSIDA for the second-straight year...also a three-time Academic All-WAC honoree…finished the season 22-14 overall in singles and 18-9 in doubles…kicked off dual play with four-straight wins – including a 6-4, 6-4 win over Saint Mary’s (1/27) Matis Bot and was named WAC Singles Player of the Week afterwards…took down DePaul’s Fran Tonejc 6-4, 6-3 in NM State’s 4-2 win over the Blue Demons…helped NM State defeat Grand Canyon (4/28) 4-2 in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament when he ousted GCU’s Gregoire Balenci 6-4, 0-6, 6-3. Fall: Won the consolation bracket at the Aggie Invitational to start the year…won his doubles flight at the Wildcat Invitational with teammate Sergi Espias and advanced to the semifinals in his singles flight…won his singles flight at the Lobo Invitational, beating out players from Northern Arizona, Air Force Academy and Denver…advanced to the round of 64 in the ITA Regional Championships before finishing 2-2 in consolation play.
2016-17: Spring: Earned Second-Team All-WAC honors after going 20-7 overall on the year in singles and 4-1 in league play…named to WAC All-Tournament team with doubles partner Sergi Espias…guided NM State to its third-straight regular-season title…recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons in singles…also garnered ITA Scholar-Athlete, CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-WAC honors…tied for the third-most wins in doubles play on the team with 17 victories…had a nine-match win-streak to open the dual season…named WAC Player of the Week on Feb. 14 after sweeping the weekend against Incarnate Word (2/11) and UT Arlington (2/12)...defeated UNM’s (2/25) Sean Baklini 6-3, 6-2 on the road…opened league play with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Justin Cvitanovic of Grand Canyon (3/24)…went 3-0 at the Golden State Invitational with partner Espias. Fall: Opened the season winning four of his first five singles matches… reached the flight finals match in singles action at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational…followed up with a singles flight title at the Balloon Fiesta Tournament in Albuquerque.
2015-16: Spring: Helped NM State earn its second-straight Western Athletic Conference championship and NCAA Tournament bid…earned Second-Team All-WAC honors at No. 3 doubles with teammate Mauri Benitez…named to Academic All-WAC Freshman/Transfer team...finished season 20-13 overall in singles and 3-1 in WAC play…went 14-15 overall in doubles and 3-1 in conference action…picked up his first dual victory in singles at UNLV (2/5) with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (13-11) win over Charlie Croxford…won four-straight matches beginning with a 6-5, 6-4 win over Joakim Pinola of Hawaii (3/11)…recorded first WAC singles victory over Matt Alderson of Seattle U (3/24) 6-4, 6-2…earned his first dual victory in doubles against Gonzaga’s (1/30) No. 3 doubles tandem…won his fourth-straight doubles match with a 6-4 win over Ethan Ammon and Yehonatan Kaufman of UTRGV (3/25). Fall: Came as advertised, winning the singles and doubles draw at the Aggie Invitational to start his career at NM State…won six-straight singles matches before falling in the semifinals of the Arizona Invitational to teammate, Strahinja Trecakov 6-2, 6-4…reached the semis of the consolation bracket at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championship…defeated BYU’s No. 1 singles player, Scott Bhone, 6-4, 6-0 in second consolation match at regionals…teamed up with Nicholas Springer for most of the fall season, winning six of his first seven doubles matches…defeated NAU’s Jackson Lee and Thomas Fisher at the USTA/ITA Mountain Regional Championships 8-2.
Prior to NM State: Had a very successful junior circuit career playing in ITF and Confederacion Sudamericana de Tennis (COSAT) tournaments…ranked No. 5 in South America in U14 category in 2011... was ranked No. 278 in the ITF at one point…won the ITF Junior Circuit’s Barquisimeto Juniors Open doubles title in August of 2014 with teammate Sebastian Ramirez…defeated now-teammate Christofer Goncalves 6-4, 6-2 in the same tournament to claim the singles title as well…advanced to the semifinals in the next two ITF Junior Circuit tournaments in Valencia and Caracas for singles…earlier in the month, he also claimed the doubles title at the Copa Club Farallones event…also advanced to the semifinals several times in 2013 in both singles and doubles...was also a stud in the classroom, earning National Honor Society distinctions and Highest Honors Diploma at Marymount School.
Personal: Son of Nicolas Asmar and Diana Barbosa…has younger sister, Laura…nickname is Kike…majoring in civil engineering.
