Freshman (2008-09): Stakne went 12-8 in singles play in his first season as an Aggie and was one of five Aggies to win 10 more matches in 2009. He was 1-1 at No. 4, 10-7 at No. 5 and 1-0 at the sixth spot. He won six out of his first seven matches to start the year and was 2-2 in WAC matches. In the 2009 WAC Championship quarterfinals, Stakne's 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Nevada's Augustin Myard clinched the match for the Aggies to advance them on to the semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons. Stakne only played in two doubles matches as a freshman. He won his only match with Jim Brouleau at No. 2, but fell in his No. 2 doubles match with Gustave Diep.

Prior to NM State: Stakne was coached by the father of former Aggie great Stjepan Beg on the island of Rab in Croatia and he was ranked in the top 30 in the Croatian Men's Open Division prior to his arrival at NM State. Before joining the open division, Stakne was ranked in the top 10 in the Boys 18-and-under age group in his country and he was also ranked there when he was in the 14 and 16 year-old age groups. He has won more than 20 tournaments and saw very good results in the open division towards the end of his junior career.

Personal: Stakne was born in Rijeka (HR), Croatia, and he is the son of Mirjana and Joze Stakne. He is majoring in international business.
