Erika Castillo Lopez

Erika Castillo Lopez enters her first year as a student assistant coach for head women’s tennis coach Ivan Fernandez after wrapping up her time on the courts at the NMSU Tennis Center in the spring of 2016.

The Veracruz, Mexico, product helped guide NM State to an undefeated (5-0) slate in conference play to capture its first regular-season title since joining the Western Athletic Conference as a senior. She also teamed up with teammate Gabrielle Joyce to earn Second-Team All-WAC in doubles play this past season.

In her first season with the Aggies, Castillo Lopez played an integral role in NM State winning the WAC Tournament Championship and earning a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

Prior to NM State, she played two seasons at Johnson Community College in Overland Park, Kan. As a freshman, Castillo Lopez earned Jayhawk Conference Rookie of the Year honors (2012) after going 15-5 in singles action and 9-4 in doubles play. She also won the Region VI doubles championship at the No. 1 slot. As a sophomore, she captured the Region VI Championship in both singles (No. 2) and doubles (No. 1) and garnered Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American honors.

Castillo Lopez is finishing up her degree in accounting at New Mexico State.
