Biography

Junior (2007-08): Zuniga was one of four Aggies that won 10 or more singles matches in the 2008 dual match season. She went 1-0 at No. 4, 5-6 at No. 5 and 6-3 at No. 6 to give her a 12-9 singles record. She won her last three singles matches of the year and five out of her last six. One of those wins came over Amber Brightly from I-10 rival UTEP. She won both of her conference matches in straight sets and won her only singles match in the 2008 WAC Championships, helping the Aggies defeat Hawai’i and reach the semifinals for the second time in three seasons. In doubles play, Zuniga completed solely with teammate Anne Fagegaltier and the duo posted an 8-6 record together at No. 3 during the spring. In the fall tournament season, Zuniga and teammate Stephanie Eusebe won the B doubles draw at the UNM Individual Invitational on Oct. 20. Combining the fall and spring seasons, Zuniga had a 19-14 singles record and a 16-9 doubles mark. She enters her senior season having won 101 combined singles and doubles matches. Zuniga, the industrial engineering major, was named to the 2008 Academic All-WAC team for the third consecutive season and to the ITA Scholar Athlete list for the second time.

Sophomore (2006-07): Zuniga was named the WAC Player of the Week on Feb. 22, after going 3-1 in singles play the week before. Her only loss that week came to Southern Mississippi’s Stephanie Dellocono and she had a four-match winning streak prior to that loss. She won her only singles match at the 2007 WAC Championships, a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, victory over Idaho’s Lauren Shrubb at the No. 4 position. Zuniga also won her doubles match at the conference championships, an 8-4 victory with teammate Estelle Guillaumond. Zuniga had the second most singles victories on the team in the spring, going 11-12. She was 1-0 playing at the No. 3 position, 8-11 at the fourth spot and 2-1 at No. 5. In doubles play, Zuniga had a 12-6 record in the spring and was 14-12 overall after going 2-6 in the fall tournament season. Her 7-5 singles mark in the fall combined with the spring to give her an 18-17 overall record on the year, the second most wins on the team. She was selected to the 2007 academic all-conference team once again for the Aggies.

Freshman (2005-06): In her first campaign with the Aggies, Zuniga made the 2006 Academic All-WAC Team. Zuniga also was named to the 2006 ITA Scholar Athlete list. Competing the entire season at either the No. 5 or No. 6 singles position, she finished the year with an overall singles record of 12-9. She went 5-0 at the No. 5 position and 7-9 at the No. 6 slot. Zuniga also saw action in doubles play with multiple partners. She went 1-1 at the No. 1 doubles position with teammate Celine DuFosse and was 3-3 paired with Nicole Fintell at the No. 2 position. She was 3-2 at the third spot while being partnered with Violaine Rollet and 1-4 with Anne Fagegaltier. In the 2006 WAC Championships, she won her quarterfinal No. 6 singles match against San Jose State’s Elke Harms (6-3, 6-3), but fell in consecutive sets to Boise State’s Tiffany Coll (6-2, 6-1) in her semifinal singles match. Zuniga was 8-2 in fall singles play.

Prior to NMSU: Zuniga played tennis from 1998-2004 under coach Fernando Pena while competing at the national, sectional, regional and state competitions. She was ranked 11th nationally in 2004 and was a National Cup semi-finalist. In doubles competition, Zuniga was also a National Tournament semi-finalist.

Personal: Zuniga was born in Monterrey, Mexico and is the daughter of Rodolfo Zuniga and Teresa Elizondo. She is majoring in industrial engineering.
