Former Aggie player John Michael Herrera returned to his alma mater last fall as the Aggies’ volunteer assistant coach and enters his second season on the staff. Herrera was an assistant at the University of Texas-San Antonio in 2004.
The Abilene, Texas, native came to NMSU in 2000 after playing two seasons at Howard Junior College in Big Spring, Texas.
During his Aggie playing career, Herrera was NMSU’s starting third baseman in 2000, hitting .331 with two home runs, 33 RBI and five stolen bases. As a senior he batted .245 with two home runs and 16 RBI. He helped the Aggies to a 32-23 record, the school’s first winning season since 1996.
While at Howard, Herrera was the team’s starting second baseman, batting .370 with six home runs. He earned All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference honors in 1998, leading the team to a 40-12 mark.
He was a first team all-district pick as a shortstop at Abilene High School.
Herrera earned a degree in Electrical Engineering Technical from NMSU in 2003.
