Mike McGilton enters his fourth year of coaching New Mexico State men’s golf for the 2022-23 school year. McGilton, a former NM State standout, joined the staff as an assistant coach in October of 2021 after volunteering since 2019.
Since joining the NM State staff, McGilton has helped lead the Aggies to the NCAA Postseason in both an individual and team manor. In 2021, McGilton and the Aggies won the Western Athletic Conference championship and earned the right to compete in the NCAA Albuquerque Regional as a team. The following year, Aidan Thomas qualified for the NCAA Bryan Regional under McGilton’s tutelage.
The Aggies have seen success in the classroom with McGilton on staff as well. In both 2019-20 and 2020-21, NM State was named a GCAA All-Academic Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better.
As a player for NM State, McGilton built quite the resumé. Competing for the crimson and white from 2014-2019, McGilton was a four-time Academic All-WAC selection and a two-time Academic All-American (2018 & 2019). In 2018, McGilton fired a 216 in the 2018 Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate to take home the individual title.
Off of the golf course, McGilton was the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative for men’s golf from 2015-19.
After graduating from NM State, McGilton competed professionally for three years. Throughout the three year career, McGilton competed in multiple mini tour events and state opens all across the United States. McGilton concluded his professional career with a trio of Top Five finishes on the Swing Thought Tour.
McGilton graduated from New Mexico State University with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in Government. McGilton is married to Kayla McGilton, a New Mexico State grad in nursing and a former member of the NM State Swim & Dive team.
