Scott Lieberwirth enters his eighth season as the head coach of the Aggies after a very successful 2009-10 season that saw NMSU win its fourth WAC Championship in five years and advance to the NCAA Regional tournament for the third consecutive year. It was the fifth time the Aggies went to a regional tournament under Lieberwirth.
In 2009-10, the Aggies captured their third straight WAC Championship, as junior Tim Madigan was named WAC Golfer of the Year and freshman Justin Shin was selected by WAC Freshman Golf of the Year. Madigan was also named a first-team All-WAC selection, while Shin and Gaston De La Torre were both selected as second-team All-WAC. Lieberwirth guided the Aggies to a seventh-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Southwest Regional tournament. On the year, the Aggies finished eight of their 13 tournaments in the top 10. Madigan was also named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-American Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The 2008-09 was filled with great success, including their second straight WAC Championship and two all-WAC selections (Travis Reid and Kevin Lozares). Reid was also crowned the 2009 WAC individual champion, as the Aggies won by just a single stroke. Lieberwirth led the Aggies to an 11th place finish at the 2009 NCAA Southwest Regional tournament. On the season, the Aggies won three tournaments (Wolf Pack Classic, Herb Wimberly and WAC Championships). The Aggies finished seven of its 13 tournaments in the top five as a team.
In 2007-08, the Aggies had one of their more successful seasons, winning three straight tournaments at the end of the year including the 2008 WAC Championship. Four Aggies earned All-WAC honors under Lieberwirth's guidance. The Aggies finished eleven of their 13 tournaments in the top 10 as a team. NM State's 12th-place finish at the NCAA East Regional is the third best finish at a regional tournament since 1995.
In 2006-07, the Aggies men's golf team won one tournament, the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., and had five top 10 finishes. The New Mexico State men's golf team held on to the lead on the final day of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate to win by 10 strokes at the NMSU golf course. Senior Freddy Esparza led the Aggies as he fired a career low 5-under-par 67 to put him in second place. He was only two stokes behind Nebraska's Brady Schnell who brought in a three round total of 10-under-par 206. The Aggies shot a team total of 13-under-par 851, while Nebraska took second and the best round of the tournament on the final day. The Aggies finished in a tie for second in the very next tournament, the University of Hawai'i Intercollegiate, with the College of Charleston, Louisiana Tech and San Diego. The NMSU men's golf team had the low round of the day at 1-under-par 287. They finished the tournament at 5-over-par 869 in a tournament where Matt Edwards played with confidence and finished in third place.
In 2006, Lieberwirth was named the WAC Coach of the Year, as the Aggies placed in the top 10 in eleven tournaments and finished in the top five on six occasions. Matt Edwards flourished under Lieberwirth's teaching as Edwards won the WAC Individual championship and advanced to the NCAA West Regional. Three players were named to the All-WAC team in 2005-06 under his direction.
Lieberwirth led the NMSU men's golf team to a first-place finish at the Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., where the team fired a 4-under-par 836. He also coached the Aggies to a first-place finish in Kahuku, Hawai'i, at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. At the Wolf Pack Invitational in Reno, Nev., Lieberwirth led the Aggies to a 10-under-par 854 and a second place finish.
Lieberwirth took over the program in January of 2004 after former Aggie head coach Larry Beam retired. Under Lieberwirth's leadership, the Aggies went on to win the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Championship and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA West Regional. The Aggies, who had finished ninth in the Sun Belt in 2003, rattled off eight top 10 finishes, including six top five finishes on their way to the conference title.
After graduating with honors from New Mexico State, Lieberwirth went on to play on the Tight Lies and Hooters tours from 2000 through 2003 while serving as a golf instructor at Riverside Country Club in Carlsbad, N.M. He also served as a substitute teacher at Carlsbad High School from 2001-03.
When Lieberwirth finished his Aggie career, he left as one of the most successful golfers in program history. During his four-year career, Lieberwirth recorded two victories, 11 top 10 and seven top five finishes. The Aggies, as a team, registered 23 top 10 and 12 top five finishes during Lieberwirth's career.
As a senior, Lieberwirth was named first team All-Big West and MVP. In 1999, he became only the sixth player in program history to win a conference title, winning the Big West Conference Championship with a three-round score of 218. That same year, Lieberwirth won the Herb Wimberly/Coca Cola Classic with a three-round score of 14-under-par 202.
Lieberwirth also excelled off the course while at New Mexico State. He was named to the All-Big West Academic team as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 2000, he was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-Scholar team.
Before attending NMSU, he played five seasons for Carlsbad High School, leading the Cavemen to the state championship in 1996. As a junior, Scott won the state individual championship and helped his team to a third-place finish. He won 15 tournaments at Carlsbad High and was named all-state four times.
Lieberwirth resides in Las Cruces, N.M., with his wife, Heather and daughter Rylie (2).
