Aerick Sanders is in his fourth year with the New Mexico State men’s basketball team in the 2016-17 season, joining the Aggies as an assistant coach in June 2013. His main responsibilities include scouting, game preparation, on-court instruction and recruiting.
He’s helped direct NM State to a pair of Western Athletic Conference Championships, a pair of Tournament Championships, two NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT appearance.
Sanders helped guide the Aggies to their second consecutive WAC Championship in 2015-16, posting a 23-11 overall record and a 13-1 WAC campaign. The Aggies played in the WAC Tournament title game and made their first NIT appearance since 2000.
In 2014-15, he assisted the Aggies to the WAC Championship with a 23-11 overall record and a 13-1 league mark. NM State added its fourth consecutive WAC Tournament Championship and the accompanying NCAA Tournament berth.
In his first season in 2013-14, he aided the Aggies to their third straight WAC Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament as the Ags posted a 26-10 record.
Sanders spent the 2012-13 season as an assistant coach at Montana State. Prior to coaching, Sanders owned and operated the Sanders Sports Academy that worked in skill development from 2010-12.
He played professional basketball for six seasons in France, Latvia, Israel, Spain and Turkey from 2004-10.
A standout player at San Diego State, Sanders played under Steve Fisher and Menzies, who was an assistant coach with the Aztecs from 1999-2003. Sanders was an All-Mountain West selection and team captain as a senior for the Aztecs. He averaged 16.1 points and 9.8 rebounds in his final season. Additionally, Sanders led SDSU to the NCAA Tournament following a Mountain West Tournament Championship in 2002.
Sanders graduated from San Diego State with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2005.
