Strong Play on Both Ends from NM State Women’s Basketball as they Defeat New Mexico Highlands

Stifling defense and strong shooting allowed NM State to beat New Mexico Highlands, 94-37

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State women's basketball team squared off with New Mexico Highlands on Friday night and won the game, 94-37, with strong team play from start to finish. The victory keeps the Aggies unbeaten, 6-0, against the Cowgirls and puts the team at 4-2 on the season.

After winning the opening tip-off on Friday night, New Mexico State never looked back. The first quarter saw the Aggies go on a 21-0 run, the largest of the game, to end the quarter. Defensively, the team forced 13 turnovers in the quarter and capitalized on the play, shooting 11-18 from the field.

The second quarter featured the same style from the Aggies as they came in with stifling defense. Heading into the locker room, NM State had forced 22 turnovers and converted on their opportunities. At the end of the first 20 minutes, NM State led 47-11. Play was led by Brooke Salas who had 13 points and three steals, while Moriah Mack had 11 points of her own.

When the second half began, NM State continued to expand the lead and looked to change the line-up midway through the third quarter. Sophomore Sara Lopez got in for her first time this season and did not disappoint. After going hitting one of her free throws, Lopez stayed on the offensive and hit back-to-back three pointers in her first minute of play. Another double-digit run, 10-0, put the Aggies up 71-26, heading into the fourth.

The final ten minutes featured a back-and-forth scoring quarter as neither team jumped out to a large run, but the Aggies maintained their strong play and finished the game on top, 94-37. For the second time this season, NM State had six players finish with double digit points from Moriah Mack (18), Brooke Salas (13), Tyesha Taylor (12), Gia Pack (11), Tamera William (11), and Sara Lopez (10), in the first game of her career.

As a team, the Aggies forced a season-high 33 turnovers with eight Aggies contributing at least one block or one steal. The squad finished the night out-rebounding New Mexico Highlands, 42-29. NM State also fared better from the field as they went 35-66 and shot 62.5 percent from three-point range.

The team will take a short break before their next match up as they host the University of New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 5:30 p.m. MT.
