Victoria Castro hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the fifth inning as the NM State softball team topped UTEP 12-4 on Sunday at the NM State Softball Complex. This was the second time the Aggies (5-0) beat UTEP (2-3) in as many days.
The Aggies held a 9-4 lead with the bases loaded when
Fahren Glackin was hit by a pitch to score
Fiana Finau.
Tatum Reedy was then walked to bring
Kelsey Horton home before Castro hit the ball into right field to bring Brenna Nakamrua home for the 12-4 victory over the Miners.
The Aggies amassed 12 runs and 11 RBIs on 13 hits, while UTEP had four runs and four RBIs on just five hits.
Karysta Donisthorpe racked up five strikeouts and allowed just two hits in 14 batters faced.
NM State scored in the first inning for the fifth game in a row.
Haley Nakamura and
Rachel Rodriguez each hit a single before an
Emma Adams double brought H. Nakamura home. Finau then added a double of her own for an RBI as Rodriguez crossed the plate.
Brennalyn Nakamura hit a single to move Finau to third base. Finau then stole home to give the Aggies a 3-0 advantage.
UTEP had their first hit of the game in the second inning, but left one on base as the Aggie defense held the Miners scoreless. NM State added two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Castro and Finau scored to give the Aggies a 5-0 advantage.
With the Aggies up 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, NM State had the bases loaded with two outs when
Corrin Green stepped up to bat. The sophomore hit a grand slam over the center to give NM State a 9-0 lead. UTEP then added four runs in the top of the fifth inning to leave the Aggies with a 9-4 advantage before Castro hit a walk-off single to right field.
The Aggies play again on Friday at 4:00 p.m. as they host Oklahoma in Troy Cox Classic at the NM State Softball Complex.
