NM State Comes from Behind to Defeat Maine

Box Score CLEARWATER, Fla. – A big sixth inning from the Aggies gave the NM State softball team a 7-5, come-from-behind victory over Maine on Sunday in their final game of the USF Under Armour Showcase at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex.
 
NM State (20-10) scored seven runs and amassed six RBIs on 13 hits. Rachel Rodriguez went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Fahren Glackin pitched 5.0 innings and had five strikeouts in 17 batters faced.
 
Maine (3-4) scored five runs and had four RBIs on six hits. Annie Kennedy pitched 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on 12 hits in 30 batters faced.
 
After falling behind 5-2, the Aggies scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to collect the win. Victoria Castro hit a single to the shortstop. Rachel Rodriguez then hit a double to left field and advanced on an error by the left fielder to score Castro. Emma Adams hit a double to left center to score Rodriguez before Kelsey Horton hit a single to right field to score Adams. Fiana Finau then hit a two-RBI home run over left field to give the Aggies a 7-5 victory.
 
The Aggies put runners on base in the first and third innings. In the top of the first inning, Horton hit a single to right field and Finau reached on first base on a fielder's choice, but the runners were left stranded. In the third inning, Emma Adams singled to shortstop but was left stranded as well.
 
Maine scored first in the bottom of the third inning. Meghan Royle was walked, Kristen Niland singled down the left field line and Erika Leonard hit a bunt single to load the bases. Rachel Carleson then reached on a fielder's choice as Royle scored. Niland and Leonard scored as Janelle Bouchard doubled to right field. Carlson scored on a wild pitch and Bouchard scored on a sacrifice fly as Maine took a 5-0 lead.
 
NM State cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Tatum Reedy hit a single to right field and Amy Bergeson entered as a pinch runner. Bergeson advanced to third as Brennalyn Nakamura hit a double to left center. Haley Nakamura singled to the shortstop to score Bergeson to leave Maine with a 5-1 advantage.
 
The Aggies added a run in the top of the fifth inning. Rodriguez singled to left field and Horton hit a single to second base to move Rodriguez to second. Finau then hit a single to left field to score Rodriguez to leave the Blackbears with a 5-2 lead.  
 
The Aggies take the field again on Tuesday as they face Purdue at 9:00 a.m. MT in the UCF Spring Fling at the UCF Softball complex.
