BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The NM State women's tennis team cruised to a 4-0 victory on Saturday at the Brownsville Tennis Center against the No. 4-seed, Seattle U, in the second semifinal match of the Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Â
The Redhawks (11-15) came out firing in doubles action with a 6-2 win over NM State's (11-9) No. 1 doubles pair. However, New Mexico State's No. 2 doubles pair of
Ashvarya Shrivastav – the reigning WAC Player of the Year – and
Rimpledeep Kaur powered through SU's pair for the 6-2 win.
Â
With the doubles point hanging in the balance, the No. 3 tandem of
Chloe Jolliff and
Lindsay Harlas finished their opponents off, 6-3, from Seattle U shortly after and gave the Aggies a crucial 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
Â
Not too long after the start of singles play, Mother Nature had other plans for both teams and forced a three hour and 50 minute rain delay. Kaur put the Aggies on top 2-0 when she ousted SU's Kellie Woodman 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles position. The win pushed Kaur's winning-streak to six in singles play.
Â
Leading before the rain delay, Harlas – a freshman from Las Cruces, N.M. – dismantled Sari Kwee 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 slot once play resumed. With match point within sight, Jolliff finished things off for New Mexico State with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Redhawks' Madison Maloney at No. 3 singles.
Â
The Aggies are set face UT Rio Grande Valley (10-10) in the WAC Championship match on Sunday at 8 a.m. (MT), weather permitting. The last time NM State and UTRGV squared off in WAC play, the Aggies came out on top 4-3 in Phoenix, Ariz.
