NM State Wins Brown Invitational with Sweep of Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – New Mexico State (9-4) finished the weekend undefeated with a 25-15, 25-15, 25-9 sweep of Brown (2-8) on Saturday. With three straight wins, the Aggies were named Brown Invitational Champions.

"I think we were pretty efficient tonight," said head coach Mike Jordan. "We served it pretty tough, and gave ourselves some easy chances and converted. I liked our floor defense. Most of all, I liked how efficient we were. I was definitely our best match of the weekend."

As was the theme for the tournament, junior Jordan Abalos led the Aggies with 13 kills. She earned tournament MVP honors after averaging 5.60 kills per set and putting up four service aces, 38 digs and two blocks in three matches. Sophomore Brianna Ainsworth was also named to the All-Tournament team after logging 72 assists, 26 digs, four service aces and two kills.

From the first serve, the match was all NM State. They opened on a 4-1 run and would push the lead to 10-5. Brown had no answers for the Aggies runs, with the squad going on several five or more point runs. NM State eventually took the set 25-15.

The second set started a bit closer with the teams trading point early, with four ties. The Aggies eventually broke away at 10-7 and never looked back. At the height of their lead, NM State was up 21-10. They won the frame 25-15.

The third and final set started close again with three ties early, but NM State then raced out to a 9-6 lead. In the blink of an eye, the Aggies had gone on a 7-1 run and led 15-7. NM State ended the match on a 10-2 run, claiming the final set 25-9.

The Aggies are back in action on Thursday as they open Western Athletic Conference play at home against Seattle U.
