Aggie Volleyball Tops UMKC

New Mexico State volleyball swept the Roos on Thursday night for is fifth-straight victory.

KANSAS CITY – New Mexico State volleyball swept UMKC at the Swinney Recreation Center on Thursday night. The Aggies defeated the Roos 25-17, 25-20, 25-17 for their fifth-straight win.

"We were pretty efficient and did a good job serving and digging the ball," head coach Mike Jordan said. "Winning on the road isn't easy."

How It Happened

NM State (16-7, 7-2) started the match by scoring three-straight against UMKC (7-16, 3-7), but a point run by the Roos gave the opposition an early one-point lead. The Aggies went point-for-point with UMKC and small scoring runs gave New Mexico State a 15-11 advantage heading into the media timeout. NM State continued build on its lead and the team closed out the set by scoring three-straight for the 25-17 victory. 

New Mexico State carried its momentum into the second set, holding an early 11-4 advantage over the Roos. NM State gave up a pair of four-point runs to UMKC but never gave up the lead. The Aggies scored a four-point streak of their own for a 20-16 advantage over their opponents late in the set. In the end, NM State fought off the Roos' best efforts and won the set 25-20..

The Aggies came out hot to start the third set by scoring four unanswered points, however the Roos battled back, tying the set 7-7. NM State reclaimed the lead after posting a scoring run with Kaylee Neal behind the service line. New Mexico State built on its advantage and led by seven late in the set, forcing UMKC to take a timeout. The Aggies continued to dominate down the stretch taking the final set 25-17 to complete the sweep.

By the Numbers

New Mexico State posted 42 kills on hitting .301 in the match. The Aggies held the Roos to just 29 kills and a .019 hitting percentage. NM State recorded 50 digs and 40 assists to go along with 10 blocks. Kassandra Tohm led all players with 14 kills in the match. Seniors Ariadnne Sierra and Neal tallied 13 and 12 digs, respectively. Megan Hart posted a team-high 6 blocks followed by Brigette Lowe, who recorded five.

The Aggies continue their road trip when they take on Chicago State on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 11 a.m. (MT).
