LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The New Mexico State baseball team put on an offensive clinic this weekend at Presley Askew Field, erupting for 29 runs in Sunday's victory over Mount St. Mary's. The win also gave the Aggies their first four-game series sweep since 2013 against Louisiana Tech on the road.
Â
In total, six of the nine Aggie batters that registered multiple hits also had multiple RBI. As a team, NM State had 27 hits and combined for 28 RBI on the day after pushing across 25 runs last night in the second game of its doubleheader.
Â
After scoring a run in the opening frame, the NM State (6-3) bats exploded in the bottom half of the second and scored 10 runs on seven hits. Four of the first five batters that came to the plate were plunked by Mount St. Mary's (0-4) starter Jesse Archambault, which opened the flood games for New Mexico State.
Â
NM State put another crooked number in the third inning when
Austin Botello and
Dan Hetzel teamed up to go yard back-to-back for three runs.
Â
The visitors picked up their first run of the game in the fifth after
Alex Reyes got into a bit a jam, but was able to walk away with just one earned run.
Â
Mount St. Mary's pitching staff just wasn't equipped to battle the NM State batters on Sunday, giving up 15 runs in the final three innings for the Aggies.
Â
Tristen Carranza flexed his muscles on Sunday, belting a pair of two-run jacks and finished 4-for-5 at the plate with nine RBI while scoring three. Botello continued to rake as the dish for NM State, going 6-for-7 on Sunday with a homer and five RBI.
Â
Alex Reyes (1-0, 1.93 ERA) picked up his first-career win on Sunday, pitching 2.2 innings of action, giving up just an earned run on two hits while striking out three.
Â
New Mexico State now turns its attention to Arizona State (4-3) who it'll face in Phoenix on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. (MT) on the ASU live stream. The Aggies will then return home for another four-game series at home beginning on Friday, March 3, with Yale.
