Men's Basketball Takes Show on the road to KC

The NM State men’s basketball hits the road this weekend for a match-up against UMKC.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The league leading New Mexico State men's basketball team hits the road this weekend for a 6 p.m. contest against UMKC on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Municipal Auditorium on the WAC Digital Network.

Neil Harwell will have the call for Saturday's game while Michael Watson serves as the analyst. Aggie fans can also catch the game on the WAC Digital Network via over-the-top apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV or Roku Devices.

500 CLUB
With 3:16 left to play in the first-half last Thursday against Seattle U, Jemerrio Jones pulled down his 500th career Division I rebound before finishing with 11 that night. The Memphis, Tenn., native is the first Aggie to pull down 500 boards since Pascal Siakam recorded 658 rebounds in his two seasons in the Crimson & White.

With 513 total rebounds in Division I coupled with his 599 rebounds at Hill Junior College, the 6-5 forward has pulled down a total of 1,112 boards. To note, Jones' sophomore season was cut short due to injury after 13 games but was able to grab 134 boards.

Heading into Saturday's game at UMKC, forward Eli Chuha is 53 boards shy of reaching the 500 rebound plateau as well.

STREAKY
Through games on Wednesday, Jan. 24, New Mexico State's 10-game winning-streak in league play is fifth-best in the nation. The four teams ahead of the Aggies are Vermont (26), Rhode Island (16), FGCU (13) and ETSU (11). NM State is also tied with Purdue and Bucknell for the second-longest road winning-streak in NCAA at six games while Saint Mary's leads the nation with 12-straight road victories.

New Mexico State is also one of 17 teams in all of Division I that is still undefeated in conference play with a 5-0 mark.

MEETING UP AT MUNICIPAL
Despite a 6-16 overall record, the distribution of points and guard play for UMKC is very equal amongst its starters. Four of the six players who have significant starts this season are averaging in double-figures – including the team's leading rebounder.

The Aggies hold the head-to-head series 9-1 – including a nine-game winning-streak that started in 2014. NM State's lone loss to the 'Roos came in its first game against UMKC in 2014. As a team, the 'Roos are shooting 40-percent from the floor with a .347 clip from downtown. The Aggies should have a feast on the boards with UMKC giving up 41.5 rebounds per game to opposing teams.

Bishop Xavier paces the group of scorers with 12.1 points per game on the year while dishing out a team-high 73 assists as well. His .402 shooting clip is tied with Broderick Robinson for the third-best shooting-percentage on the team behind Brand McKissic (.450) and Jordan Giles (.413)

Broderick is second on the team in scoring with 11.7 points per game, but leads the team on the boards with 4.7 rebounds per game. The 6-1 guard is also a threat beyond the 3-point arc, knocking down 45 so far on the year while shooting 38.8-percent from deep. In addition, his 33 swipes on the year is good for the team lead.

Isaiah Ross is third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.0 points thanks to his 2.2 triples per game. Giles rounds out the list of double-digit scorers for UMKC, checking in at 10.0 points per game. Aleer Leek, UMKC's big man, standing at 6-9, has 25 blocks on the year while averaging 3.7 boards and 5.3 points.

LAST TIME OUT
The Aggies were firing on all cylinders last Saturday when it hosted Utah Valley at the Pan American Center. Zach Lofton was red-hot from beyond the arc, knocking down 7-of-13 for 24 points while Sidy N'Dir recorded a season-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting – including four from downtown. Johnathon Wilkins finished with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting with Eli Chuha rounding things out with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists en route to NM State's dominating 86-59 victory against the Wolverines.

UP NEXT
The Aggies will have a quick turnaround when the get home as Northern New Mexico comes to town for a 7 p.m. tilt on Tuesday, Jan. 30, before UT Rio Grande Valley wraps up the first-half of conference action.
