Triple Threat
In NM State's 82-64 win over Alcorn State in the FIU Holiday Tournament in Miami,
Brooke Salas recorded the school's first triple-double since Andrea Kabwasa on Feb. 15, 1992. Salas recorded 32 points, 22 rebounds and 11 blocks on 54.2 percent (13-24) shooting from the field.
Her 11 blocks tied a school record while her 22 rebounds are good for sixth-most in a game in Aggie history. This was also the third time Salas has scored 30 points and she passed Madison Spence for eighth on the New Mexico State all-time scoring list with 1,503 points.
Salas' performance helped earn her WAC Player of the Week Honors for the second time this season.
Scouting the Highlanders
The Highlanders enter Friday's matchup with a 4-8 overall record and dropped a 56-53 decision at Utah Valley in their last game on Dec. 22. As a team, UCR averages 57.8 points per game on 38.1 percent shooting from the field.
Junior forward Marina Ewodo leads UC Riverside in scoring and rebound with 11.4 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. Jannon Otto is second on the squad in both categories sitting at 10.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game and is the only other Highlander to average double figures in scoring. Otto notched a double-double against UVU with 14 points and 10 rebounds while also recording eight assists.
A Look at the Gauchos
UC Santa Barbara holds a 3-9 record but snapped a three game losing streak with a 63-58 win at San Diego State on Dec. 21. Last season, UCSB beat the Aggies 77-47 in the Pan American Center while knocking down 14 three pointers.
The Gauchos average 54.8 points per game and are led by Coco Miller at 13.0 points per game. Miller dropped 29 points in UCSB's win over San Diego State. Joining Miller in double figures is Natalia Bruening with 10.1 points per game. Bruening also leads UC Santa Barbara in rebounding with 7.1 rebounds per game.
Last Time Out
The Aggies traveled to Miami to compete in the FIU Holiday Tournament along with South Alabama, FIU and Alcorn State. NM State took on South Alabama on Thursday, Dec. 20, and dropped a 68-67 decision.
Brooke Salas and
Gia Pack both recorded double-doubles in that game, the second time the two have notched double-doubles in the same game this season.
New Mexico State then took on Alcorn State on Dec. 21 in the tournament's consolation game. The Aggies rode a triple-double from Salas to an 82-64 victory over the Lady Braves. Salas scored 32 points, pulled down 22 rebounds and blocked 11 shots. Her 11 blocks tied a school record while her 22 rebounds were the sixth-best single-game performance in NM State history.
