Aggie Baseball Stays Hot, Complete Sweep of Delta Devils

New Mexico State baseball sweeps MVSU behind offensive onslaught.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State baseball's offense poured in 35 total runs while the Aggies pitching staff turned in two more stellar performances as the Aggies swept Saturday's doubleheader against Mississippi Valley State at Presley Askew Field by scores of 15-4 and 20-0, respectively.

The Aggies' offense stayed hot on Saturday, scoring 35 runs across two games one day after setting a school record with 39 runs in a 39-0 win over the Delta Devils (0-4) on Friday night.

Game one saw a solid performance from Aggie (5-2) starter Justin Dehn (1-1). He finished the day after tossing six solid innings of work, giving up just two unearned runs on four hits before Andrew Edwards came in relief of the righty to start the seventh inning.

Mason Fishback paced the Aggie offense in game one, going 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Freshman Noah Haupt stayed hot after his 6-for-7 and 10 RBI performance Friday night, and went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and three RBI.

The Delta Devils closed within 10-4 of the Aggies with two outs in the eighth, but Alex Reyes closed the door on MVSU's opportunity before the Aggies piled on five more runs to close out the frame. Reyes also tossed a scoreless ninth to give NM State the 15-4 win.

GAME 2

Game two of Saturday's doubleheader played out much the same for the Aggies offensively and showcased another great performance from the pitching staff as the Aggies dominated 20-0 in a shortened seven inning game.

Johnathan Groff notched five shut-out innings and Chance Hroch added two more scoreless innings in relief as the two Aggies combined to shutout MVSU for the second-time this weekend.

Fishback finished off his outstanding weekend with four more RBI and two more doubles in a 3-for-5 showing at the plate. Logan Bottrell was stellar in the leadoff spot going 4-for-5 and scored three runs for the Aggies. Tristan Carranza plated three runs to cap off a weekend in which the Aggies outscored the Delta Devils 74-4.

NM State finished with 31 hits on the day and 61 total over the weekend's three-game series, which was complimented by a pitching staff that gave up just four runs in the series.

UP NEXT

Aggie baseball will travel to Tucson, Ariz. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, to take on the Arizona Wildcats before returning to Las Cruces on Friday, March 2, for a four-game series against Harvard.
