TUCSON, Ariz. – The New Mexico State baseball team made its second trip to Tucson, Ariz. on the year to take on Arizona at Hi Corbett Field on Tuesday night. The Aggie bats were quiet throughout the night and the Wildcats capitalized taking down NM State 14-0.
NM State (13-9) southpaw
Matthew Perea got his first start as an Aggie and was countered by Juan Aguilera also making his first career start for Arizona (11-9). Each hurler opened strong only allowing one hit in each half inning with the runners being left stranded for a scoreless game through two innings.
The Wildcats ended the scoreless bout, as they struck first in the bottom of the third. A leadoff single through the left side was followed by a wild pitch to put the runner in scoring position with no outs. A sacrifice fly to right then moved the runner within 90 feet of home plate. Arizona's Alfonso Rivas stepped to the dish with two outs and laced a triple to right center to bring home the runner and through three, the Aggies trailed 1-0.
Following a scoreless frame for NM State in the fourth, Arizona was able to add to the lead in the bottom half. With runners on second and third with no outs, an infield single brought in the first run of the inning. The next at-bat saw a single to left bring in a man from second, which was coupled with a two-RBI triple to the gap to put NM State down 5-0. The scoring in the fourth closed with a single to center to plate one more run and the Aggies trailed by six runs after four innings.
The 6-0 deficit for the Aggies expanded in the sixth inning when a walk loaded the bases with one out. The next batter knocked a double down the left field line that brought in all three runners to put the Aggies down 9-0. With runners on second and third, a wild pitch brought home one more run and NM State trailed 10-0 through six innings.
Arizona continued to add to the lead with a pair of two-RBI base knocks in the bottom of the seventh.
Brett Worthen took the mound for the Aggies in the eighth, his first appearance since March 1, 2016 against Texas Tech, and had three strikeouts to hold the Wildcats scoreless. Unfortunately, the bats for the Crimson & White remained quiet and the team fell 14-0.
New Mexico State now returns home to open Western Athletic Conference play with a three-game weekend series against Seattle U, March 23-25, at Presley Askew Field.
