Aggies Drop First Midweek Contest with Bulldogs

NM State opened a two-game series with No. 21 Mississippi State on Tuesday and fell 9-1.

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The New Mexico State baseball team opened up a pair of midweek contests against No. 21 Mississippi State on Tuesday at Dudy Noble Field. Despite getting on the board first to grab an early lead, the Aggies gave up three multi-run innings and lost to the Bulldogs 9-1.

To begin the midweek tilt NM State (8-5) started Brock Whittlesey against righty Cole Marsh of Mississippi State (7-5). The Aggies got on the board early with a first inning run.

Despite the first two batters being retired, Mason Fishback got the first base knocks for NM State with an infield single. Tristen Carranza followed up with a single to left field that put runners on the corners. Logan Ehnes then got the Aggies on the board with an RBI single for the Crimson & White to go up 1-0 in the top of the first.

The Bulldogs quickly answered, however, when a bases loaded fielder's choice brought home a runner to tie the game up at one. The next batter singled to right center to put another run up on the board for the opposition and put the Aggies down 2-1.

This deficit for NM State expanded in the bottom of the second when a double to right center got the Bulldogs in scoring position. Then a single, followed by an errant throw scored a run to put the Aggies down by two.

The pitchers from each side settled down to throw scoreless frames in the fourth and fifth and keep NM State behind 3-1. Mississippi State then put runners on first and third with one out in the fifth. This saw the Bulldogs register a sacrifice fly to right field, which brought home the man from third.

NM State's bats remained quiet to close out the game with Mississippi State adding a pair of multi-run innings in the sixth and seventh to put the Aggies down 9-1. This stood as the final score with neither team getting back on the board in the final two innings.

New Mexico State looks to rebound in the second game of the midweek series with No. 21 Mississippi State on March 7 at 5:30 p.m. MT.
